Lufkin ISD Administration announced that Joshua Slack would be taking the helm of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) department as the director next school year. Steven Rhoades, the current director, will be retiring after 40 years of service to Lufkin ISD.
Slack has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with Mathematics Concentration and a Masters of Education in Educational Leadership both from Stephen F. Austin State University. He has served in education for 21 years in several different capacities. He currently is serving as Assistant Principal at Coston Elementary. Before that, he was Assistant Principal at Diboll High School and Assistant Principal at Livingston Junior High respectively. Before his career in education leadership, he was a teacher, coach, team leader and a campus math specialist at several elementary schools across the state.
“I am most excited about seeing all the great things that are going on in the CTE program and the wonderful people that run them. After talking with Mr. Rhoades and hearing about all of the outstanding things he had to say, it made me even more excited about the future for CTE in Lufkin ISD,” said Slack.
As CTE Director, Slack will direct and manage district career and technical education programs and facilities to meet student needs. He will serve as instructional leader in development and improvement of instructional programs in career and technical education. The main goal of CTE is to prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s jobs.
“Mr. Rhoades has developed one of the best CTE programs in the state, and I hope to continue that tradition. He attributes that success to the amazing staff at Lufkin High School. Talking with him reminded me of a quote by Walt Disney, ‘You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality.’,” said Slack.
“Joshua Slack will be an excellent addition to the Lufkin High School team as he assumes the role of the Director of Career and Technical Education. Josh is data driven and has a tremendous desire to help all students be successful,” said Lynn Torres, Superintendent of Schools.
Slack will finish out the school year at Coston Elementary and will assume the role of CTE Director in the following school year.
“I am looking forward to giving students an opportunity to be successful after high school. All they need is to be given a chance or opportunity to find that one thing that they can succeed at,” said Slack.
In his spare time, Slack enjoys spending time with his family. He has been married to Amber Slack for 17 years this May, and they have a daughter named Haylee who attends Lufkin Middle School and two sons, Jacob who attends Burley Primary and Jaxson who attends day care. Together they enjoy camping in their travel trailer, hunting, cooking and vacations to Disney World.
