October is Dyslexia Awareness Month and Lufkin ISD will be celebrating the talent of our dyslexic students with a DYSLEXIA ART SHOWCASE at the Museum of East Texas. All of our dyslexic students have the chance to submit an entry for the exhibit, THE GIFT OF CREATIVITY. This will be an opportunity for our students to spotlight their artistic and creative abilities.
The showcase will begin with a kickoff on Sunday, September 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. This event will unveil the entries of 1st through 12th grade LISD students with dyslexia. It will include drawings, paintings, photographs, and sculptures. Literacy/Dyslexia Specialist, Stephanie Dixon, from Brookhollow Elementary is helping coordinate the event as a way to allow our students to express their creativity.
From the book, Dyslexic Advantage, “Traditionally, attempts to understand dyslexia have focused almost entirely on problems with reading, spelling, and other academic skills. As a result, little attention has been paid to the creative things individuals with dyslexia do especially well. By learning how to recognize, nurture, and properly use these strengths, individuals with dyslexia can be helped in their efforts to achieve success and personal fulfillment.”
All are welcome to attend the opening on September 29th. We especially want to extend an invitation to our community. Our students are very proud of their work and excited to share it with Lufkin.
