The Lufkin High School accounting team has won the state UIL Accounting Competition for the second year in a row. The State Championships were held May 2-4, 2019 at The University of Texas in Austin. The essence of UIL events is “Educational Excellence Through Competition.”
The Lufkin team scored the highest number of points across all 6 conferences (1A -6A) with 1222 points out of 1260 test points. The team score is the sum of the team’s top three scores.
Team members are seniors Joshua Simmons, captain, and Bryce King. Juniors members are Kaylin Davis, Lesley Barrientos, and Lizbeth Martinez. Josh and Bryce tied for second place individual with a score of 415 each out of 420 individual points. Kaylin Davis placed sixth with 392 points. Captain Josh Simmons is the only returning team member from last year’s 6A State Championship team.
Students competed with the top 192 accounting students across the state of Texas. In order to prepare for the spring competitions (district, regional, and state), the team members practiced 3-4 hours after school each week beginning in January 2019.
Accounting coach, Janice Holcomb, said, “The students are all talented math students, but the work ethic of the team provided the foundation for their successes all spring.”
Accounting coach, Janice Holcomb, has taken ten regional team championships to state winning a silver medal three times and gold last year. She has taken individual winners to state over the past twelve years. She was even awarded the 2017 Sponsor Excellence Award by the University Interscholastic League for her outstanding representation in UIL accounting over the past 20 years.
