The Board of Trustees recognized the Commended National Merit students and the National Hispanic Recognition students at the October board meeting. Lufkin High School seniors Ali Khurshid and Bryce King received Commended in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program among 34,000 throughout the nation for scoring in the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the competition by taking the SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
Three LHS students, Riley Latham, Fernan Chong, Moises Rueda were named in the National Hispanic Recognition Program. This award is given to about 5,000 students out of the 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the test.
Charlotte Bynum, CFO, announced to the board in a public hearing that the district received a superior rating of 100 in the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) 2018 report. Mrs. Bynum said that Lufkin ISD has received a score of 100 for the past five years in a row. In a letter to the citizens of the school district, Mrs. Bynum describes the rating as a system designed to encourage Texas public schools to better manage their financial resources to provide the maximum allocation possible for direct instructional purposes. She went on to say this will result in student success and the Business Office is committed to supporting the instructional and operational goals of the district to result in student success.
