The State Board of Education Board President, Donna Bahorich, visited Burley Primary and toured the dual language classes while she was in Lufkin. Dr. Keven Ellis, Lufkin ISD past board president and SBOE committee member, brought Ms. Bahorich to Burley Primary where students demonstrated their bilingual and biliterate skills. Students from Slack Elementary spoke to the attendees as well and demonstrated their ability to speak in Spanish. Burley Primary and Slack Elementary have an excellent partnership especially when it come to the Dual Language Program. The transition from one school to the other is seamless. Others in attendance were Lufkin ISD School Board President Scott Skelton and board members Kristi Gay and Andra Self. Both principals spoke, Dr. Betsy Mijares from Burley Primary and Danny Whisenant from Slack Elementary, as well as the Director of Bilingual Services, Sylvia Eubanks.
