Dr. James Hockenberry
The Lufkin ISD Board of Trustees has announced Dr. James Hockenberry as the lone finalist for the position of Lufkin ISD Superintendent. Hockenberry brings extensive knowledge of public education and 29 years of experience to the position.
Since January 2020, Hockenberry has served as the Longview ISD Assistant Superintendent for District Services. He spent 14 years as a superintendent in two districts, Center and Chireno. Before that, he was a principal, assistant principal and science teacher.
“The board considered 43 applications, community input, two layers of interviews and reference and background checks in our extensive search for our next superintendent,” said Kristi Gay, board president. “Dr. James Hockenberry is the Board’s unanimous choice to fill this position. He has extensive experience and knowledge in all aspects of leading school districts, as well as good communication skills. We look forward to working with Dr. Hockenberry.”
Hockenberry has earned three degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University: a Bachelor of Science in 1991, Master of Education in 1999 and Doctorate of Education in 2010.
His work as a mentor and presenter has been well-received at the local, state and national levels. Advocating for high expectations and equality for the underrepresented minority, Hockenberry said he believes that all students can learn at high levels. He spends a large part of his time consensus-building with stakeholders to embrace transformational leadership and build capacity in human capital.
“Lufkin ISD is considered the premier school district in East Texas,” Hockenberry said. “I appreciate the board’s trust in me for the opportunity to serve the students, staff and community of Lufkin. My wife and I are eager to experience and witness the remarkable pride displayed here. I look forward to working with all stakeholders to establish further the school system they desire, which is in students’ best interest as they prepare for their future.”
He and his wife of 26 years, Mary, have two children, Haley, 24 and Grant, 20.
After the state-required 21-day waiting period, Hockenberry will officially be named the Lufkin ISD Superintendent.
