Today, September 15, is International Dot Day, a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration inspired by the book The Dot written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds. With almost 19 million people celebrating in 187 countries, students at Trout Primary participated in the celebration by trying their hand at “making their own mark”.

The idea behind the 32-page children’s book is to “just make a mark and see where it takes you.”

According to thedotclub.org, the book is described as:

The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe.

Literacy Interventionist at Trout Primary Angela Holt read the book and encouraged students to create their own dot. Using markers and manilla paper, students drew their unique dot. One student even put his dot on a face as a birthmark.

The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds is a wonderful story to read to students in showing them that they are capable of so many things even when they don’t feel like they measure up to those around them or society as a whole. Their OWN mark is unique and special. Our students truly have so much to offer if they just have the encouragement to see things differently and to not be afraid to just try,” said Holt.
